On August 22-23, the “Seminar on Warm-water Fish Culture for Tajikistan” sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was held in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, and Researchers Zhu Jian and He Jie of FFRC were invited to attend the seminar. More than 40 people, including representatives of fishery management departments, fishery producers' associations, and FAO delegation in Tajikistan, attended the seminar.

Mr. Haydar Fersoy, FAO Senior Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, presented the progress of FAO’s “Support to Warm-Water Fishery Sector (TCP/TAJ/3805/C4)”, and Mr Mirali Naimov introduced the current situation of warm-water fish culture in Tajikistan, its major cultured species are Chinese conventional freshwater fish such as silver carp, bighead, common carp and grass carp.

At the seminar, Researcher Zhu Jian, FAO international fishery and aquaculture expert, made three reports, including Overview of Warm-water Fish Aquaculture and Development, Conventional Freshwater Fish Breeding Farm Management and Seed Production, Commercial Fish Aquaculture and Healthy Production Technology. Researcher He Jie introduced the breeding and aquaculture technology of snakehead and catfish in China. The participants spoke highly of China’s aquaculture technology experience and its significant contribution to the world fishery. On this occasion, FFRC signed a memorandum of cooperation with Mohii Tojikiston, an association of fishery producers of Tajikistan.

During the seminar, participants conducted research on local conventional freshwater fish and rainbow trout production.

After the meeting, Researcher. Jian Zhu and Researcher. He Jie also made a special trip to the FAO Representative Office in Tajikistan for exchanges, and met with Mr. Oleg Guchgeldiyev, FAO Representative in Tajikistan. The two sides reached a consensus that they will work together to play the role of FAO Office and FAO Reference Center, promote technical cooperation and personnel exchanges in the field of fisheries between China and Tajikistan through the China-Tajikistan South-South Cooperation Project, and promote the transformation of bilateral fisheries and development of agricultural modernization.
